Ditching the Donkey Work: Automation Revolutionises Drilling with One-Hole Automatic

Epiroc's SmartROC Tophammer cabin rigs are about to become even smarter, thanks to a significant upgrade to their Rig Control System (RCS). This isn't just a software tweak; it's a game-changer for drilling efficiency.

"Valuable new features are now available," says Ulf Gyllander, Global Product Manager at Epiroc. "These additions will benefit the rigs with some improvements and a more stable RCS."

At the heart of the upgrade lies the introduction of One Hole Automatic (OHA) for the SmartROC T35, T40 and T45 models. This innovative feature automates the entire drilling process for a single hole, from start to finish.

"Imagine this," explains Gyllander. "You set the drill plan, and the rig takes care of everything. It automatically adds rods as needed, drills down to the desired depth, and then retrieves all the rods once the hole is complete. Minimal intervention from the operator is required."

This translates to a significant boost in productivity. Operators can spend less time on manual rod handling and more time focusing on other tasks, ultimately leading to faster completion of drilling projects.

But OHA isn't just about speed. Automation also ensures greater consistency in operations, minimising the risk of human error and reducing wear on drill rods and other consumables. This translates to substantial cost savings in the long run.

"For our customers, this upgrade is a win-win," says Gyllander. "They get increased efficiency, lower operating costs, and the ability to get more out of their existing rigs."

Existing rigs get smarter too!

The upgrade isn't just for the T35, T40, and T45 models. SmartROC D50, D55, D60, D65, and C50 rigs will also benefit from the new RCS version. These machines already boasted many of the features included in the update, but they'll receive an even more optimised automatic rod-handling sequence, further streamlining the drilling process.

"This upgrade takes their existing capabilities to the next level," says Mattias Hjerpe, Global Product Manager at Epiroc. "With minimal operator input required, they can achieve new levels of efficiency."
